Colombia Digital Nomad Visa: Who Qualifies

How the V-Nómada Digital visa works for remote workers paid from outside Colombia.

By · Updated October 13, 2026 · 8 min read

You qualify for the Colombia digital nomad visa if you earn at least COP 5,252,715 a month working remotely for employers or a company outside Colombia. At Colombia Desk, we help remote workers move to Medellín and Bogotá, and on this visa we start with your bank statements and your employer letter.

You also need a passport from a visa-exempt country, such as the United States, Canada or the United Kingdom. The visa lasts up to two years and costs USD 194 in Cancillería fees. That income line equals three times Colombia’s 2026 monthly minimum wage, about USD 1,640 at around COP 3,200 per US dollar in mid-October 2026. You cannot work for Colombian companies or clients on it.

Who Qualifies for the Colombia Digital Nomad Visa

The Colombia digital nomad visa, officially the V-Nómada Digital, is for remote workers whose employer or business sits outside Colombia. Article 46 of Resolución 5477 of 2022, the visa rulebook of Cancillería, sets four conditions:

  1. A passport from a country whose citizens do not need a visitor visa to enter Colombia.
  2. A letter from your foreign employer or employers, a service contract with foreign clients, or proof that you own a foreign company.
  3. Monthly income of at least three minimum wages, shown on bank statements for the last three months.
  4. Health insurance that covers you in Colombia for your whole stay.

Eligibility starts with the passport. A 2024 Cancillería entry notice counted 102 visa-exempt nationalities and territories, including the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom. A remote worker from a country outside that list cannot use this route, however high the income.

The work must stay foreign. You cannot work for employers or clients domiciled in Colombia on this visa, so a freelancer who picks up a Medellín client after arriving needs a different visa.

The 2026 Income Line in Pesos and Dollars

The income test is three times Colombia’s monthly minimum wage, which is COP 1,750,905 in 2026 under Decreto 1469 of 2025. That makes the line COP 5,252,715 a month. Because Cancillería measures it in pesos, the dollar amount you need moves with the exchange rate.

Monthly incomeIn pesos at COP 3,194 per USDClears the 2026 line
USD 1,600COP 5,111,104No
USD 1,650COP 5,270,826Yes, by less than COP 20,000
USD 2,000COP 6,388,880Yes
USD 3,000COP 9,583,320Yes

The table uses the official rate of COP 3,194.44 per dollar for 10 to 13 October 2026. Earlier in the same month the rate topped COP 3,300, and a stronger peso raises the dollar income you need. At COP 3,000 per dollar, the line would be about USD 1,751.

Cancillería reads the income from your bank statements. If your pay varies month to month, check each of the last three statements against the line before you apply. Leave a margin of at least 10% if you can.

How Much the Visa Costs and How to Apply

The Colombia digital nomad visa costs USD 194 in government fees, USD 56 for the study and USD 138 for issuance. The fees are set by Resolución 3969 of 2026, in force since 1 April 2026. Paying in euros, it is EUR 150. Both fees are due within 10 calendar days of Cancillería’s request, and the study fee is not refunded if the visa is refused.

Apply in this order:

  1. Get the employer letter or client contracts, or your company’s ownership records.
  2. Download three months of bank statements showing the income arriving.
  3. Buy health insurance valid in Colombia for the full stay you plan.
  4. Translate any document not in Spanish.
  5. File online with Cancillería and pay the fees when asked.

The visa allows beneficiaries, so a family member can come with you on it.

How Long the Digital Nomad Visa Lets You Stay

The V-Nómada Digital visa is valid for up to two years. That is the main reason to get it, since a visa-exempt visitor without it can stay only 90 days on arrival, extendable to 180 days per calendar year.

OptionWhat you showLongest stayLeads to resident visa

M-Inversionista (property)Property worth COP 612,816,750 in your nameUp to 3 yearsYes, after 5 years

If you only want a long winter in Medellín, the entry permit may be enough and saves the paperwork. If you want to stay past two years and build toward residency, the nomad visa does not count, so look at the Colombia investor visa.

Registration after arrival needs a check. Article 118 of Resolución 5477 exempts only some visitor visas, such as tourism and business, from registering for a cédula de extranjería. The nomad visa is not on that exempt list. A May 2026 reply from Migración Colombia describes the exemption as covering all V visas. Ask Migración Colombia which rule applies to you when your visa is issued, since the cédula deadline is 15 calendar days for visas that need one.

Taxes After Six Months in Colombia

Staying more than 183 days changes your tax position. DIAN, Colombia’s tax authority, treats you as a tax resident after more than 183 days in the country within any 365 consecutive days, counting the days you arrive and leave. A two-year nomad visa crosses that line easily, so speak with a Colombian accountant (contador) before day 183 about how your foreign salary will be treated.

Who Should Not Use the Nomad Visa

The nomad visa is the wrong route if you plan to work for Colombian clients or employers. Resolución 5477 forbids that work on this visa, so a Colombian client means applying for a different visa first.

It is also the wrong route if you want permanent residency, because two years on a visitor visa do not count toward it. A remote worker who is buying a home anyway should compare the property investor visa, which counts toward a resident visa after five years.

Our view would change if Cancillería amends article 46, or if the pending court case over the 2026 minimum wage resets the peso figure. Either would move the income line, and we would re-run the income table.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to get the Colombia digital nomad visa?

USD 194 in government fees since 1 April 2026: USD 56 for the study and USD 138 for issuance, or EUR 150 if you pay in euros. The study fee is not refunded if the visa is refused. Health insurance, translations and any lawyer cost extra.

What income do I need for the Colombia digital nomad visa?

At least three monthly minimum wages, COP 5,252,715 a month in 2026, shown on your bank statements for the last three months. That is about USD 1,640 at mid-October 2026 rates. The peso figure rises each January with the minimum wage.

Can I live in Colombia as a US citizen?

Yes. US citizens can stay up to 90 days on arrival and extend to 180 days per calendar year without a visa. To live in Colombia longer, you need a visa such as the digital nomad visa, the retirement visa or the property investor visa.

Which countries are eligible for the Colombia digital nomad visa?

Nationals of countries whose citizens do not need a visitor visa for Colombia. A 2024 Cancillería notice counted 102 such nationalities and territories, including the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom. If your country needs a visitor visa, the nomad route is closed to you.

Do I pay Colombian taxes on a digital nomad visa?

Possibly, depending on how long you stay. DIAN treats you as a tax resident after more than 183 days in Colombia within any 365 consecutive days, counting arrival and departure days. If a two-year stay will cross that line, have a Colombian accountant (contador) review your income before day 183.

Can I bring my family on the digital nomad visa?

Yes. Article 46 of Resolution 5477 allows beneficiaries on the V-Nómada Digital visa. A Colombian immigration lawyer can confirm which family documents need an apostille in your case before you file.

Does the digital nomad visa lead to residency in Colombia?

Not directly. It is a visitor (V) visa, and the five-year path to a resident visa in article 90 runs through M visas such as the investor and pensioner visas. If permanent residence is the goal, compare those routes before you choose.
