Planning a Trip to Medellín or Bogotá

Where to stay, what to plan, and trips for families, groups and big dates.

Plan five days for a first Medellín trip: three for the city and two for day trips such as Guatapé. At Colombia Desk, we plan stays in Medellín and Bogotá for families, groups and couples, and every plan starts with the number of days. Three days covers the city alone, and a week lets you add Bogotá or slow the pace.

Medellín sits at about 1,500 m with highs around 28 °C most of the year, so the weather rarely rules out a date. Two big events shape the calendar instead. The Feria de las Flores runs in late July and early August, and the Christmas lights run from late November into January, so book early for either.

How Many Days a Medellín Trip Needs

Five days is the right length for most first trips to Medellín. Medellín itinerary: 3, 5 and 7 days lays out each version day by day, and the split looks like this:

Trip lengthWhat fitsWho it suits
3 daysComuna 13, the center and Plaza Botero, Metrocable and Parque Arví, one night outA stopover, or a weekend on a longer Colombia trip
5 daysThe 3-day plan plus Guatapé and El Peñol, and a slower food dayMost first-time visitors
7 daysThe 5-day plan plus a coffee farm or a flight to Bogotá for two nightsFamilies, groups and anyone who wants rest days

Guatapé is the first day trip to add. The town sits about 81 km and 1 hour 50 minutes from Medellín by road. The rock of El Peñol has about 650 to 740 steps to the top (740 is the most-cited count), according to El Espectador. Entry cost 30,000 Colombian pesos (COP) in 2025, and the rock closed for a time after a November 2023 rockfall, so confirm it is open the day before.

Where to Stay on a Medellín or Bogotá Trip

Pick the base before anything else, because it sets your taxi times and your nights out. Where to stay in Medellín compares El Poblado, Laureles and Envigado by what each costs and who each suits, from nightlife to a quiet family base.

Where to stay in Bogotá does the same for Chapinero, Usaquén and the historic center, La Candelaria. The UK Foreign Office reports armed robberies of tourists in La Candelaria, so we suggest sleeping in the north and visiting the center by day.

Trips with Children

Medellín is the easier city for a family trip, because of its warmth, its lower altitude and attractions such as Parque Explora, a science museum with an aquarium. Medellín with kids covers where to stay, what children enjoy and what each attraction costs.

Bogotá with kids starts with the altitude. The city sits at about 2,600 m.

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says children are as likely as adults to feel altitude sickness, with risk starting at sleeping heights of about 2,450 m. The guide shows how to pace the first two days and which places, such as the Museo del Oro, are free for under-12s.

Group Trips and Weddings

Groups need the most planning, and three guides cover them:

Bachelor parties in Medellín meet the city’s enforcement against sexual exploitation. In April 2024 the Alcaldía de Medellín issued decrees against commercial sexual exploitation covering Parque Lleras, Provenza, Calle 10 and Parque de El Poblado. That followed the case of a US citizen found in a Provenza hotel with two girls aged 12 and 13. We plan group trips around dinners, a villa, day trips and clubs, and we decline any request for paid sex.

Festivals and the Calendar

The Feria de las Flores is Medellín’s biggest event. In 2026 it ran from 31 July to 9 August, ending with the Desfile de Silleteros on Sunday 9 August.

Feria de las Flores covers the events and where to stay near them. The 2027 dates have not been announced.

The Christmas lights (alumbrados) ran from 28 November 2025 to 12 January 2026, daily from 6 pm to midnight, with the main route along Parques del Río. The 2026 dates had not been announced by mid-October 2026.

If your dates are flexible, check both events before you book. Come for them on purpose and book early, or pick a week either side if you want a calmer city.

Who Should Plan Differently

Our five-day advice assumes a first trip in a drier month. In April, October or November, Medellín’s wettest months, add a spare day so rain does not cost you Guatapé.

Two kinds of trip need a different start. If you are visiting to decide whether to move, book a furnished apartment for a month and use the living hub instead of a hotel itinerary. If you are coming for a property viewing trip, the buying hub sets out what to see and in what order.

Booking a Group Trip with Help

For a family, a bachelor party, a wedding or a holiday group, our group trip concierge books the villa, the transport, the tables and the day trips. We stay reachable while you are here.

To plan your Medellín trip, pick a length from the table above, then open where to stay in Medellín and choose your base.

Frequently asked questions

Is Medellín safe to visit in 2026?

Medellín can be visited safely with precautions, but the US State Department rates Colombia at Level 3, “Reconsider travel” (issued March 31, 2026), and the risks in Medellín are specific. The UK Foreign Office warns about drugging, dating-app lures and express kidnappings by fake taxi drivers. The US Embassy warned about dating apps in Medellín in 2024. Order taxis through an app, keep your phone out of sight on the street and read is Medellín safe before you go.

How much does a trip to Medellín cost?

Beyond flights and lodging, a cheap restaurant meal costs about COP 26,000 and a mid-range dinner for two about COP 150,000, per Numbeo in October 2026. A metro ride costs COP 4,400 on a single ticket. The fixed taxi fare from José María Córdova airport into Medellín is COP 132,000.

Is Cartagena or Medellín better?

Medellín is better for a mild climate, day trips into the mountains and a big-city food and nightlife scene. For a group trip, Colombia bachelor party compares the two in detail.

What is safer, Medellín or Bogotá?

Neither is clearly safer on homicides: both reported about 13.9 per 100,000 people in 2025, per Medellín Cómo Vamos and the Alcaldía de Bogotá. The risks a visitor meets differ: dating-app robberies in Medellín, and taxi robberies known as the paseo millonario in Bogotá. Is Bogotá safe covers how to avoid them.

Why do Americans go to Medellín?

Mostly for the climate, the prices and the day trips. Highs sit around 28 °C and lows around 17 to 18 °C across the year, and the metro and Metrocable make the city easy to get around without a car. If the trip turns into thoughts of moving, our living hub covers what comes next.

What emergency number do I call in Medellín?

Dial 123, Colombia’s free national emergency line for police, fire and ambulance. In Medellín, visitors can also dial 911, which routes to 123 with a bilingual operator.
