For a Colombia bachelor party, pick Medellín if the group wants a villa, a lake day and city nightlife. Pick Cartagena if it wants boats, islands and a walled old town by the sea. At Colombia Desk, we plan group trips in Medellín: we book the villa, the transport and the day trips, and we stay reachable while the group is here.
The two cities differ most on where a group of ten can sleep under one roof and how much of the trip happens on the water.
The same two rules apply in both. Nobody leaves with someone they met on an app or in a bar that night, and nobody books anything involving paid sex. Medellín police run operations against sexual exploitation in El Poblado, and foreigners have been arrested in them.
Medellín vs Cartagena for a Bachelor Party
Medellín wins for groups that want a private house, mountain scenery and several neighbourhoods of nightlife, while Cartagena wins for groups that want the sea. The table compares the two on what decides a group trip.
| Medellín | Cartagena | |
|---|---|---|
| Setting | Inland valley city at about 1,500 m, highs around 28 °C | Caribbean port city at sea level, with a UNESCO-listed walled old town |
| Where a group sleeps | Villas in the El Poblado hills or fincas near Rionegro, or large apartments | Colonial houses in the old town or Getsemaní, or beach houses |
| Signature day | Guatapé and the Piedra del Peñol, about 81 km away | Boat to the Rosario and San Bernardo islands |
| Nightlife | Provenza, Parque Lleras, Manila, Las Palmas, La 70 | Concentrated in and around the old town |
| Getting around | Taxis and a private van for the group | Walking in the old town, boats for islands |
| Pick it if | The group wants a house base and variety | The group wants water every day |
Our pick: Medellín for most groups of eight or more, because a villa that sleeps everyone plus a mountain day at Guatapé suits groups with mixed tastes. Cartagena is the better choice for a group of four to six that wants a beach weekend and plans to spend two of three days on a boat.
Where the Bachelor Party Stays in Medellín
The best base for a Medellín bachelor party is one villa or finca that sleeps the whole group. Keep it close enough to El Poblado that the ride back from dinner is short. Three options work:
- A villa in the hills above El Poblado or along the Las Palmas road. Short rides to restaurants and bars, with views and usually a pool.
- A finca near Llanogrande, in Rionegro. More space and garden for the money, close to José María Córdova airport, but every night out means a longer drive down to the city.
- Two or three apartments in one El Poblado building. Walkable to dinner, but the group splits up at night.
Check the paperwork before anyone pays. Under Ley 2068 de 2020, a rental of under 30 days is a tourism service, and the host needs an active Registro Nacional de Turismo (RNT) number. The Alcaldía de Medellín also requires the building’s bylaws to allow short stays, and it suspended 105 tourist homes after 408 inspections between 2024 and 2026, per Minuto30.
A group in an unregistered villa can be moved out mid-trip. When we book a villa, we ask for the RNT number first and confirm the property allows short stays, before the deposit goes anywhere. Our where to stay in Medellín guide covers the neighbourhoods in detail.
The Guatapé Boat Day
The Guatapé day is the one outing every Medellín bachelor party should book. The town and the Piedra del Peñol sit about 81 km from Medellín, about 1 hour 50 minutes by road, per El Espectador.
A typical day runs like this:
- Leave Medellín by 8 am in a private van, so the group travels together.
- Climb the rock: about 650 to 740 steps (740 is the most-cited count), COP 30,000 a person in 2025, open 8 am to 6 pm.
- Lunch in Guatapé, then a private boat on the reservoir for the afternoon.
- Back in Medellín by early evening, with time to rest before dinner.
Do the climb before anyone drinks. The rock rises about 220 m, and it closed for a time after a rockfall on 3 November 2023, so confirm it is open the day before. Our Medellín itinerary shows where the Guatapé day fits in a longer trip.
Cartagena’s Island Day
Cartagena’s version of the big day is a boat to the Islas del Rosario or San Bernardo, inside a national park. Park entry was COP 13,500 for the main sector and COP 11,000 for San Bernardo in 2026, per Vanguardia.
The maritime authority, DIMAR, names the Muelle Turístico La Bodeguita as the authorised departure point for passenger boats to the islands. Book only with a licensed passenger-transport company.
In 2020 Cartagena’s mayor banned boats from anchoring at Cholón, saying it is part of a national park and “not a party spot”, per El Universal. We could not confirm the current party-boat rules there, so get the operator to put the boat’s planned stops in writing before you pay.
Nights Out and Transport in Medellín
Medellín’s nightlife is spread across several areas, so plan each night around one of them. Provenza and Parque Lleras in El Poblado are the busiest, Manila and the Las Palmas road are nearby, and La 70 in Laureles is more local.
Opening hours are set by city decree and change. During the 2026 Feria de las Flores, a decree added an hour of opening in Las Palmas, Manila, Provenza and La 70 but left Parque Lleras out, per El Colombiano. We confirm the hours that apply the week the group arrives.
For dinners, a mid-range meal for two cost about COP 150,000 in October 2026, per Numbeo. For transport, book a private van for group days and app or phone taxis at night. The 2026 fixed taxi fare from Medellín to José María Córdova airport is COP 132,000 per car. A group of eight in two taxis pays COP 264,000, and one van keeps everyone together.
If you would rather hand all of this off, our group trip concierge books the villa, the van, the Guatapé day and the dinner reservations. We stay reachable for the group all weekend.
Keeping the Group Safe
The biggest risk to a bachelor party in Medellín is drugging, usually by someone a group member met that night or on a dating app. In early 2024 the US Embassy in Bogotá warned US citizens to avoid dating apps in cities like Medellín, as reported by Noticias RCN. The alert followed cases with signs of drugging, robbery and overdose. The same report says 7 foreigners, 3 of them Americans, were killed in dating-app robberies in Medellín in 2023.
The UK Foreign Office (FCDO) says criminals drug victims through drinks, food, cigarettes, aerosols and paper flyers, including with scopolamine. It also reports “express kidnappings”, often by fake taxi drivers near ATMs at night.
Set these rules for the group on day one:
- Nobody goes home with, or brings back to the villa, someone met that night or on an app.
- Never leave a drink unattended, and do not accept drinks, cigarettes or flyers from strangers.
- Use only taxis booked by app or phone, and no street ATMs after dark.
- Carry one card and a copy of your passport, and leave the rest in the villa safe.
- Share live locations in a group chat, and nobody walks back alone.
Save 123 for emergencies. In Medellín, foreign visitors can also dial 911, which the city set up in 2024 to route to 123 with a bilingual operator. Our guide to whether Medellín is safe has the full picture.
The Law on Sexual Exploitation in Medellín
Medellín actively prosecutes sexual exploitation, and foreign visitors have been arrested for it. In March 2024 an American man was found at a Provenza hotel with two girls aged 12 and 13, and the hotel was sealed, per Portafolio. On 1 April 2024 the mayor issued decrees against commercial sexual exploitation in Parque Lleras, Provenza, Calle 10 and Parque de El Poblado, per the Alcaldía de Medellín.
El Colombiano reported 92 foreigners arrested and 197 minors protected in four months of operations around Parque Lleras. We do not arrange escorts, strip clubs, “models” or anything of that kind for any group, and we decline the booking if that is what a group is after.
Who Should Skip Medellín
Medellín is the wrong pick for a group that wants beach time every day. Book Cartagena instead.
It is also a poor fit for a group that plans to meet strangers through apps. The dating-app robberies and drugging cases reported above started with that kind of meeting.
We would change our pick to Cartagena for a small group visiting in a Medellín rainy month (April, October or November are the wettest). We would also revisit the advice if the US State Department added Antioquia to its “Do Not Travel” list. To start planning a Colombia bachelor party, send us the group size and dates and lock in the villa before anything else.
